In 2006, Developers Diversified formed a joint venture with Portugal-based Sonae Sierra, to own, manage, acquire and develop retail properties in Brazil. As a result of this partnership, Developers Diversified Realty owns a 50% interest in Sonae Sierra Brasil, one of the largest retail real estate portfolios and shopping center operating companies in Brazil, comprised of 10 shopping malls totaling 3.9 million square feet and three properties in the development pipeline, totaling 1.6 million square feet.

The tenancy of our operating shopping centers is a mix of the leading retailers in Brazil in the categories of general discount merchandisers, home improvement stores, electronics, hypermarkets/grocery stores and fashion stores, as well as entertainment destinations, including theaters and restaurants.



Manauara Shopping, Manaus, Brazil

A new 500,000 square foot enclosed mall, Manauara Shopping, opened in April, 2009 in Manaus, the largest city in the state of Amazonas.  Anchor tenants include Brazil's most popular retailers: C&A, Marisa, Renner, Riachuelo, Saraiva Megastore (bookstore), Bemol (home goods), Dinamica and Hitech Import (electronics).  Restaurants and small shops balance the anchors, as well as a 10-screen movie theater and a fitness center.  Adjacent to the center, a hotel and office tower are planned, providing an additional customer base.

The main entrance has a dramatic two-story glass facade, providing an abundance of natural light to illuminate the interior.  The three level glass curtain wall in the food court allows for views which look out onto a lush preserve of trees.
